EMDR Prep Talk vs. Intensive vs. Debrief — What's the Difference?

By Amity Olson, LCSW — 2026-07-09

If you've heard the term "EMDR Intensive" and wondered what that actually means in practice — is it just one really long session? Not quite. It's a three-part structure, and each part matters.

Prep Talk

This is where we get oriented. We talk through what's bringing you in, build enough safety and rapport to do deeper work, and map out exactly what the Intensive itself will focus on. Nobody walks into reprocessing cold — this step is what makes the rest of it feel manageable instead of overwhelming.

The Intensive

This is the extended, focused reprocessing work — the part that would otherwise be spread across months of weekly hour-long sessions. Because we're not stopping and restarting every week, we can move through material with a kind of momentum that weekly therapy structurally can't offer.

Debrief

After an Intensive, there's often a lot to integrate. The Debrief session is where we check in on how things have settled, address anything that's come up since, and talk through what continued support — if any — looks like from here.
